Japan, World Bank to Finance Gulu-Atiak-Nimule Road

 

KAMPALA, March 26, 2010 – The Government of Japan and the Government of Uganda today signed a $34 million loan financing agreement for the Atiak-Nimule Road. This will be implemented along with a $68 million credit from The World Bank to finance the upgrading of Gulu – Atiak – Nimule Road from gravel to paved (bituminous) standard.

 

The World Bank funds are dedicated to the 74-kilometer stretch of the Gulu-Atiak Road as a part of the Transport Sector Development Project, while the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will contribute JPY 3.395 billion (approximately $34 million) for the 36-kilometer Atiak-Nimule Road. 

The Gulu-Atiak-Nimule Road forms a crucial regional link between Kampala and Juba, the principal city of Southern Sudan, which is critical for trade and development of both countries. The same road not only provides links to Moyo, Adjumani and Amuru districts but also connects Kenya, Uganda and Southern Sudan to Mombasa port through the Tororo – Mbale – Soroti – Lira – Karuma – Gulu Road Corridor.

 

The project is expected to take three years beginning October, 2010.
